    Notes

    • August Kothlow (as the name was originally spelled) was born 11 Aug. 1850 in East Germany about 50 miles northwest of Berlin, Germany. His parentage is unknown.

He served in the Prussian Army and was discharged in Berlin in 1876. ( I have that document)

August Kotlow and his wife Louise, and three children: Frank, Augusta and August Jr., arrived in the United States Oct. 15, 1880, on the passenger ship 'Cimbria' which held 570 passengers. Louise was pregnant with daughter Josephine when she came overseas. Josephine was born on the 14 Nov. 1880.

August had a brother Frank Kotlow and his wife Sophia, that lived in the Auburndale township in 1900-1905 Census, and was listed as having the following children: Frank 14 years, August 12, Emma 9, Ida 8, Ella 5. Sophia Kepnick Kotlow was listed as the mother of 9 children, 8 of them living.

The couple later moved to a small farm on the outskirts of Kenosha for several years. When August lived in Kenosha, he was a flag man for CNS & MRR Company and lived with his family at 6526 - 20th Ave., Kenosha. (This information from the Kenosha City directory)

The emigration information was found in the book "Germans to America", edited by Ira A.Glazier and
      P. William Filby.

The ship that the Kotlow family came on the "Cimbria" was built by Caird & Co., for the Hamburg line in 1867. She was a 3,057 gross ton ship, length 339.9 ft. X beam 40 ft., one funnel, two masts (rigged for sail), iron construction, single screw and a speed of 12 knots. There were accommodations for 58 - 1st class, 120 - 2nd class, and 500 - 3rd class passengers. She was launched on 21 January 1867. She left Hamburg on her maiden voyage to Southampton, N. Y. on 13 April 1867. On the 17 Jan. 1883 she sailed from Hamburg for N. Y., but on the 19th of January was in collision in dense fog near Borjum Island, Germany with a British vessel "Sultan" of the Hull & Hamburg line. The Cimbria's hull had a large gash abreast of the foremast and the Sultan also had a large hole forward and drifted off into the fog. The Cimbria rapidly sank with the loss of 389 lives and although seven lifeboats got away, only 133 people were saved.

(This accident happened just three years after the Kotlows emigrated on that ship.)
